Sonoma Community Center’s Artist-in-Residence Program

As a major element of our arts programming, the artist-in-residence program benefits the artist, the community center, and the local community alike. It is our belief that we strengthen our connection to Sonoma by supplying a venue for talented artists to integrate with, and become members of, the community that we hold so dearly. Our artist-in-residence has the chance to provide community members with a fresh new perspective on the Valley of the Moon.

One artist-in-residence will be chosen to spend from three to nine months living and working at the Sonoma Community Center. During this time, the artist-in-residence is able to concentrate on developing a cohesive body of work that is representative of their time here. Open to all artists living within the United States, this residency provides a self-directed emerging or established artist a supportive environment to explore their artwork and ideas. This opportunity is designed for artists dedicated to developing a body of work with a specific purpose or end goal, culminating in a gallery exhibition at the completion of the residency.

What we provide:

Sonoma Community Center provides living accommodations for the artist-in-residence, dedicated studio space in the community studio, full time use of the studio, use of the community center’s commercial kitchen, and Internet access. Resident artists also have the option of teaching classes during our regular class sessions and summer art camps.

What we ask of you:

The artist-in-residence is required to perform up to 15 hours of work trade per week in and around the studio and or community center. These duties include but are not limited to: mixing glazes; mixing/recycling clay; loading, firing and unloading kilns; maintaining a clean studio; assisting artist workshops; and assisting the ceramics program director in studio tasks and duties.
