Thanks to the determination of Fred Perry and the generosity of Gary Nelson and the Nelson Family of Companies, one of Sonoma’s oldest historic buildings has installed 21st century technology with property-wide WiFi available for all Sonoma Community Center users.
Nearly a year ago, Perry approached Gary Nelson with the idea of making SCC part of the wireless community. Thanks to Nelson employees Jake Smith and Tim Schaefer and local electrician Darryl Jones, the work has been completed, and a wireless community center is now a reality.
According to Executive Director Kathy Swett, the improvement is a great gift to the many residents who use the building. “Not only is this a great boon to our current lease partners and renters, it will help us use our great Rotary Kitchen and Café as a morning destination for those looking for a good cup of coffee while they meet their internet communication needs.”
The Center expects to have coffee/internet service available the end of October.
The community center is among the oldest public buildings in Sonoma and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Housed in the original Sonoma Grammar School built in 1915, SCC has been meeting the cultural arts needs of the valley since 1953.
