About the class
Curious about creating a Trashion Fashion runway outfit, an upcycled Trashion Barbie and don’t know where to start?
We offer free open design studios where you can find your Trashion community, work and collaborate and – NEW – this year; we have added demonstrations with hand on advice from past Trashion designers. January 29th will feature Trashion Fashion Sonoma founder and master designer, Margaret Hatcher who will share her design concepts, sources of inspiration, construction techniques and advice for creating a successful Trashion design. February 12th features long time participant and winning designer, Robert Stickley sharing his one of a kind creations come to life from rubbish to the runway! On February 26th, we have Erica Warren, City of Sonoma’s Environmental Compliance Analyst highlighting local trash collection resources and turning trash to fashion.
In addition, come and have access to space, tools, supplies and recycled materials or BYOT (Bring your own Trash!)
When you register for a class, you’ll be offered three price tiers. The middle tier comes closest to what our registration fees used to be, and covers about 50% of the full cost of your participation in the class – with the other 50% covered by community donations. The first tier creates accessibility for people with limited income, while the third tier covers the full cost of participation – so that we can use community donations to support other people’s registration costs. When you choose to register at the third tier, you directly help support the Center’s efforts to remove financial barriers for others.

“I aim to create elegant costumes that delight the viewer, and don’t take themselves too seriously.”
Born in Modesto, Margaret spent her early years in rural Calaveras County. She moved to Southern California at age nine, attended 8th grade in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and her senior year of High school in Lima, Peru. After high school, Margaret attended Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, for six months studying batik, weaving and jewelry making. Her undergraduate studies were in print making and photography at Cal State Fullerton. After moving to the Bay area, she studied pattern drafting at Louise Salinger Academy of Fashion in San Francisco. Margaret has designed costumes for dance productions, shadow plays, a video game, fashion shows, gallery installations, parades and public events. She started the popular Trashion Fashion Show at the Sonoma Community Center. She resides in the Boyes Hot Springs area of Sonoma with her husband, Mark Petersen, and two fashionista felines.
“I’m inspired by stuff and I need stuff to make costumes. Painters only need paint and canvas. If I can’t procure the materials needed, I make them as I did when I cut out, fused and handed painted hundreds of leaves to make the “Grapevines.” Why make a weeping willow gown? Because I found boxes of fake willow branches at my favorite party supply store. After discovering clear drop shaped beaded curtains, I was able make the “April Showers” costume. Thrift stores and my recycling bin now provide me with a wealth of stuff!”
