The Community Center partners with the Sonoma Valley Unified School District and other collaborators to offer arts and arts-integration programs at several campuses in the Sonoma Valley, including Dunbar Elementary, Creekside High School, and the Sonoma Charter School.
Our 6-week ‘Becoming an Artist’ curriculum for grades 1-3 leverages creative and artistic concepts as tools for overall learning and cognitive development. Through a series of weekly 30-minute classes, students learn how to use lines to create movement, make patterns to emphasize texture, understand the relationship between color and emotions, and transform unlikely materials into a piece of art that incorporates all four learned themes. Our teaching artists use games and encourage students to express and analyze their own ideas. They also weave in concepts from other subjects – including math and language – to show kids how creative concepts can help them learn in all kinds of disciplines.
