About the class

View the artwork of Jose Martinez in his solo show in Gallery 212, then take a seat at your own canvas – right in the gallery! The artist himself will guide you through the steps to create your own Dia de Muertos themed painting as you are surrounded by his bold, graphic imagery. It’s like sip-and-paint brought to an elevated level! You’ll hear how Jose created the pieces in his exhibition and take inspiration from his paintings while completing your own masterpiece.

Taught in both Spanish and English, this workshop is great for families, friend groups, or as a date night. Spend a few hours laughing and learning — you’ll be amazed at the end result: feeling uplifted and finishing a painting you’ll be proud to hang on your wall or give as a gift. Absolutely no drawing or painting experience is necessary. Beginners encouraged! All materials are included, along with light snacks and a glass of wine for participants age 21 and over.

When you register for a class, you’ll be offered three price tiers. The middle tier comes closest to what our registration fees used to be, and covers about 50% of the full cost of your participation in the class – with the other 50% covered by community donations. The first tier creates accessibility for people with limited income, while the third tier covers the full cost of participation – so that we can use community donations to support other people’s registration costs. When you choose to register at the third tier, you directly help support the Center’s efforts to remove financial barriers for others.

The Sonoma Community Center (the Center) strives to create an inclusive, safe community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The Center is committed to creating such an environment because it brings out the fullest potential in each of us, which, in turn, contributes directly to creating a community of belonging. In order to ensure a positive, safe, and welcoming experience for everyone, all program participants are asked to abide by the following policies, community agreements, and restorative safety protocol.

About the instructor

Jose Martinez

Instructor / Artist

Jose Martinez is a resident artist with the Mare Island Art Studios (formerly known as the Coal Shed Studios).  He is a trusted advocate for youth and works at the Napa Valley College and at Sonoma Ballooning. He has a BA in Studio Painting and Art History from San Francisco State University.

Jose Martinez uses oil on canvases and panels to portray average, everyday people—often those who in one way or another have had an impact on his life.
Jose’s desire is to capture the beauty and intricate nature of the human experience, be that through painting, drawing, or photography. Through his use of light, shadow, and hue, he reveals a story, highlights an emotion, or simply captures a moment suspended in time.
Jose is also dedicated to helping individuals express themselves by facilitating art classes. He believes that art is a positive outlet for expression and healing. Creativity sparks character growth, instills confidence, and engages the mind on a journey of self-discovery. Jose embraces art’s power to heal. Not only does he think that art offers an avenue for communication and self-reflection, it also allows us to reinvent ourselves.
