Using a variety of fabrics and embellishments, we will create abstract textile cards to fit within Strathmore photo frame cards (5×7), which are accompanied by deckle envelopes. Depending on the materials used and composition created, the cards can be used for holidays, birthdays and other occasions, for gifts (easily inserted into inexpensive frames), or for no reason at all except to experience the joy of creating. Each participant will go home with a minimum of two cards (one in the morning, one in the afternoon); depending on individual’s pace, more are possible. No one needs a background in art or sewing—though, of course, that wouldn’t hurt!—

just the willingness to play with bits and pieces and discover what can result. This session is about spontaneous and improvisational expression.

Creating textile cards offers many benefits. They can help jumpstart your creativity for bigger projects and break through blocks. Working on a much smaller scale provides an opportunity to experiment with new ideas and try out a variety of techniques and materials without making a major investment of time and money. The cards are an invitation to experience how liberating limitations can be and simply play with what’s on hand (no shopping!). Think back to being in kindergarten, when you weren’t yet riddled with performance anxiety. This is invaluable in making the transition from one approach to another in your art. And if you’re just beginning to get involved in art, this is a non-threatening way to get your feet wet.

There will be a lunch break.  Please bring something to eat or feel free to explore any convenient options in the Sonoma Plaza.
