VIRTUAL: Beginning Gel Plate Printing

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2021
2:00-4:00PM PT / 5:00-7:00PM ET

Instructor:  Kelly Autumn

Gel plate printing is easy, user-friendly and really fun! This exciting new format can be done from a kitchen, a dining room table, an outdoor space or anywhere there is a flat surface to work on. What is a gel plate? It’s a flexible printing surface made of gelatin, vegetable glycerin, and water. When firm, this surface can yield unbelievable prints in the style of monotype printmaking. If you can make Jell-O at home, you can make your own “jelly” plate!

Before the workshop you’ll receive a kit containing much of what you’ll need — including ingredients and a video to show you how to make your jelly plate — and instructions to prepare your art table with a few backyard garden clippings like flowers, leaves and even native weeds. During the virtual workshop Kelly will show you how to develop and play with botanical plate textures and simple transfers using water-based acrylics. You’ll learn how to make your own colorful, abstract gelatin prints and have a blast doing it from your own home. If the beginning workshop gets you hooked, you can register for Intermediate Gel Plate Printing which will take place the following day. Or dive in and sign up for both classes in advance to save $10.

All students will receive the video recording of the workshop to watch at their convenience for two weeks.  Many participants choose to observe the virtual workshop and work later, but you may also work alongside Kelly during the Zoom session.

Register by January 31st if you need the supply kit mailed to you.

Register by February 3rd to pick up your supply kit at the Sonoma Community Center.
