DESCRIPTION:

Successfully completing this course, students will reliably demonstrate the ability to:

– Find a center of interest and arrange elements of a composition.

– Describe the key light of a scene and relate its harmonic color notes.

– Name a color hue and predict the pigment color mixtures for that hue.

– Apply color masses to a painting surface and analyze chromatic interactions.

– Synthesize color variations into a harmonious composition whole.

In each class, students will see examples and follow guided demonstrations, completing exercises designed to elevate awareness of the dynamics of light, shadow, and color. By gaining experience accurately mixing color in the process of making painting compositions you will be coming closer to your own authentic artistic voice.

Students are expected to have some experience with oil painting and have some practice on their own which they want to improve. This is not a class for beginning oil painters. There will also be homework assignments each week.

Class Topics:

– Seeing to the Picture Plane

– Center of Interest

– Composing Masses of Light and Dark

– The Relativity of Color

– Understanding Subtractive Color Mixing

– Finding Color Harmonies

– Controlling Eye Movement

– Finishing, the Function of Detail

Special note regarding materials: Substrates and special pigments will be provided. As this is an intermediate level class, it is expected that most students will already have the items on the supply list. If you do not have the supplies and need assistance acquiring them please email Jill Valavanis at [email protected] Our goal is to make this course affordable for any artist.
