Independent Projects is a monthly, ongoing course designed for students expanding beyond their foundational technical skills in the studio and beginning to engage with experimental curiosity and deliberate choice making in their practices.
Students practice “becoming, containing, undoing, and re-awakening” through the embodied investigation of a personal concept or a new body of work. Through simple exercises of noticing, learned archival practices, and continued skill refining, students learn to focus and synthesize our energies with our technical skill, and develop the beginnings of a sustainable practice.
Both hand builders and throwers are welcome to this class. This class is perfect for those who want to continue learning and working in a class format but on their own individual projects and ideas, looking for support from Megan for problem solving. Read the course syllabus here.
Please bring a sketchbook and images of your ideas to hit the ground running! Meg holistically approaches what it means to build a making practice through demos, class discussions, and experimentation specific to individual and class needs. At the end of each month, the class comes together for an in progress critique and class reflection afternoon tea.
Director of Ceramics
Megan Billingham (they/she) is an artist and clay worker based in Northern California. They use experiential methods of creating, substantiated by therapeutic arts to facilitate simple, accessible interactions that foster practices in collective care and communal intimacy.
Megan received their BFA in Ceramics with minors in Performance and Art Therapy from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2020.
They work mainly with self-harvested wild clays and atmospheric firings, with multiple years of wood and wood-salt firing experience. In their work, they seek to expand the notion of function, making both traditionally functional as well as performative wares inspired by historical concepts of movement, transition, and portability. Megan is deeply invested in facilitating communal practices and group learning environments, believing that sharing is one of our most fundamental acts of conscious loving.
