About the class

This class is designed as a young child’s first independent movement class. Instruction will include warm-ups exercises, basic elements of dance positions, across the floor movement, and a creative dance through the use of stories, props and games.  Age appropriate songs and dance forms from around the world are also incorporated into this class.

Benefits include listening skills and concentration, increased coordination, and an understanding of movement, i.e.  time, space, directions and balance, social skills and development of creativity.

Required Supplies:
Dance shoes, ballet slippers, grippy socks or barefoot are needed. We have new and gently used ballet slippers as well as grippy socks donated  and may have your child’s size. Please email Miss Molly at molly@sonomacommunitycenter.org to inquire.  Please no socks (grippy kind ok) or  just tights as the floor can be slippery. Comfortable clothing to move in  or dance wear such as leotards, skirts, skirted leotards and tights (with shoes) of any color or style. Please no tutus or pajamas in class. Hair pulled off of face. Dress in layers as it can go from chilly to warm fast! Being dressed and ready for class is part of the experience and encourages focus and participation.

We have Dance Shoes/Ballet Slippers for both genders / Grippy Socks are  available if needed by the generous donation of Lynn Martin & Bobbie Collins. Reach out to see if we have your child’s size by emailing molly@sonomacommunitycenter.org.

When you register for a class, you’ll be offered three price tiers. The middle tier comes closest to what our registration fees used to be, and covers about 50% of the full cost of your participation in the class – with the other 50% covered by community donations. The first tier creates accessibility for people with limited income, while the third tier covers the full cost of participation – so that we can use community donations to support other people’s registration costs. When you choose to register at the third tier, you directly help support the Center’s efforts to remove financial barriers for others.

The Sonoma Community Center (the Center) strives to create an inclusive, safe community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The Center is committed to creating such an environment because it brings out the fullest potential in each of us, which, in turn, contributes directly to creating a community of belonging. In order to ensure a positive, safe, and welcoming experience for everyone, all program participants are asked to abide by the following policies, community agreements, and restorative safety protocol.
