About the lecture

In conjunction with Amu Arts and the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, the Sonoma Community Center is delighted to bring book artists Ryoko Adachi and Veronika Schäpers to speak about their work.

In their talk, the book artists Ryoko Adachi (Tokyo, Japan) and Veronika Schäpers (Karlsruhe, Germany) will each give an insight into their process of making artist’s books. Both artists combine refined materials with deep and profound research. While Ryoko Adachi creates works with a modern sensibility using natural objects collected in Tokyo as motifs, Veronika Schäpers concentrates on sociological phenomena she observes with an outside view as a foreigner in Japan.

The event will be accompanied by a presentation of books featured in the talk.
Be sure to visit the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art exhibit Book Becoming Art, curated by Maki Aizawa, Simon J. Blattner, and Barbara Wells, to see more of the artists’ work.

This event is organized in conjunction with Sonoma Valley Museum of Art’s exhibition, Book Becoming Art 芸術になった本,
on view January 18 – April 27, 2025. For more information, visit https://svma.org/exhibition/book-becoming-art/.

About the lecturers

Ryoko Adachi

Artist

Ryoko Adachi is a book artist based in Japan. Her work is often inspired by the forms and materials found in nature, through which she expresses her interest in science. The wide range of techniques and materials she uses is determined by the structural concept of each book. Adachi studied design and media theory at university in Japan. While working as a graphic designer, she presented installations that explored natural phenomena. Inspired by German book artists, she later started making book art and spent one year in Germany to study bookmaking with the help of a public grant. Currently based in Tokyo, Adachi practices and exhibits nationally and internationally. She has participated in international book fairs and group exhibitions as well as an artist residency in Finland.

Veronika Schäpers

Artist

Veronika Schäpers lives in Karlsruhe, Germany, where she works as a book artist.

After a three-year apprenticeship as a bookbinder she studied at the college of art and design “Hochschule für Kunst und Design Burg Giebichenstein”, Halle, specializing in painting and books. After her diploma in 1996 she received a three month scholarship with the Centro del bel Libro, Ascona, followed by a nine month scholarship with Naoaki Sakamoto in Tokyo in 1997. From 1998 to 2012 she worked as a freelance book artist in Tokyo, from 2012 to 2014 in Berlin and at present in Karlsruhe.

Her work often addresses current social phenomena; in creating her books, she always ensures the highest quality craftsmanship and works with carefully selected materials. Again and again, the works connect to Japan, where she lived for 15 years. Veronika’s works can be found in many important collections worldwide, including the Library of Congress, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Urawa Art Museum, the Berlin State Library, and the Klingspor Museum Offenbach, as well as in many private collections.

Her books have been awarded numerous prizes such as the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia and the MCBA Book Art Prize.

Veronika regularly teaches classes at the Centro del bel libro in Ascona, the University of Education Karlsruhe, holds workshops and gives presentations.
