SATURDAY & SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 24 – 25
10:00AM-4:00PM PT *includes a break for lunch*
Instructor: Miles McCreary
Location: Secret Garden
Woodfired ovens have long been a central space for communal gathering and sustenance sharing. We are thrilled to add our very own woodfired pizza oven to our property and programming here at the center, built intentionally – for the community and by the community.
Join knowledgeable kiln builder, chef, and pizzaiolo, Miles McrCreary, as he teaches the brick oven building process from start to finish. Students will develop an understanding of how different designs affect cooking potential, learn the physics of building a sprung arch, and create collaborative visual design elements for our community oven.
Formal workshop instruction will occur Saturday & Sunday from 10am-4pm, but the ceramics team and Miles will also be working Friday the 23rd from 10am-4pm. Any participants interested in learning how to set the foundation for the oven are welcome to join us on Friday as well. Please RSVP by emailing [email protected].
In ritual and celebratory fashion, the build workshop will culminate in a community inaugural pizza gathering for the students led by the Ceramics team and Miles.
Instructor, Studio Potter, Chef
Miles McCreary is a studio potter and chef who’s background working in high-end restaurants led him into the ceramics world after obsessing over the pottery used to serve his dishes. Food and pottery have taken McCreary all over the country, from working in North Carolina at Penland School of Craft, working as a private chef in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to building wood kilns in Ohio, and most recently as a long term resident at the Mendocino Art Center.
Miles now lives and works on the California coast in Albion, utilizing his practices in food and pottery to build meaningful shared experiences with his community.
