About the class
In this highly interactive poetry workshop, students will learn to live their senses out loud, recognize that they always have a place at the table to show up as their best selves, and get to know their voice through exercising “palate empowerment” to activate the creative mind.
Many of the poems that students consume and compose will embody themes of origin, roots, identity, and nostalgia. These themes guide how students engage with the world and drive the choices they make in their individual lives.
Each week, students will explore these themes through the nature of the line, repetition, image, voice, and space in the poems they read and ones they write and share together. Students will be encouraged to create new words in their poems as needed to express a thought, to write outside the form, and even into the margins or beyond the page.
All students will be provided with a packet of personally selected poems for the class and simply need to bring that with them, along with a pen or pencil they feel comfortable writing with and a poetry journal to compose their work in.
