Trashion Fashion Runway Show

Sonoma Community Center’s beloved event, the Trashion Fashion Show will be live and in-person on Saturday, April 22nd, Earth Day, from the Sonoma Veteran’s Memorial Hall with a 2:00 PM matinée and a 5:00 PM evening show with a “Sweets and Bubbles Reception” following. Outrageous head-to-toe designs, made from recycled materials and found objects, will once again walk the runway handmade by local community members who answered the challenge of turning trash into wearable art.

Come and have access to space, tools, supplies, and recycled materials to work on your runway, barbie, and/or dog trashion fashion design!
Limited space – registration is recommended.

Join special guest instructor Debra Rapoport (51.7K followers on Instagram) as she guides you in making artful and fanciful cuff bracelets from found materials. Learn Debra’s ABC technique of Assembling, Building and Constructing. Start with a paper cardboard roll as a base, then build a composition using an image from a postcard, a label, a photograph, or a magazine image. Next, add found objects such as bottle caps, Nespresso pods, buttons and shells, and finish with textures – fabric scraps, yarn, rope. Make a fashion statement by wearing several at a time!
All materials are provided but you are welcome to bring any images, textural material and objects you might like to create with.

New York style icon Debra Rapoport is wild about sustainable fashion. Working with non-traditional and repurposed materials since the 1960’s, she creates exquisite accessories using found materials. Since “Frugality is Fun” she’d rather reinvent and curate her closet than be a conspicuous consumer. Her work is in the collections of Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), MAD (Museum of Art and Design), Los Angeles County Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Helen William Drutt Collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the IIias Lanounis Jewelry Museum, to name a few.
When you register for a class, you’ll be offered three price tiers. The middle tier comes closest to what our registration fees used to be, and covers about 50% of the full cost of your participation in the class – with the other 50% covered by community donations. The first tier creates accessibility for people with limited income, while the third tier covers the full cost of participation – so that we can use community donations to support other people’s registration costs. When you choose to register at the third tier, you directly help support the Center’s efforts to remove financial barriers for others.
The Sonoma Community Center (the Center) strives to create an inclusive, safe community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Every April, Trashion Fashion celebrates the intersection of fashion, art, and environmental sustainability.
The main event is a runway show that features unique garments, made by community members from recycled or found and unlikely materials. Trashion also includes a gallery show of Barbies, saved from our local landfill and dressed in unique upcycled fashion, a free community Trash Bash party, and a Dogs on the Catwalk show for four-legged companions.
Trashion Fashion is a fundraiser that benefits the programs at the Community Center. Tickets for the main runway show typically go on sale in late February. The Trash Bash, Barbie gallery, and Dogs on the Catwalk show are free to attend. Please keep an eye on our event calendar [link] for more information about the next Trashion Fashion event!
There are many ways to get involved with Trashion Fashion. You can create (and model!) a unique upcycled garment for the main runway show, dress a reclaimed Barbie for the gallery, assist with fundraising, provide in-kind or monetary donations, or volunteer at one of the Trashion Fashion events.
