Recurring event see all

August 20, 2022 @ 10:00 am August 21, 2022 @ 4:00 pm

Instructor: Visiting Artist Mariana Sampaio
Location: Studio 209

August 20th & 21st 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Two day workshop!

Portugal has a rich history in ceramics, especially their ornate decorative tiles used on building facades and throughout the interiors of homes and businesses. The techniques Mariana will share in this workshop, are inspired by tile panels created in the 16th and 17th centuries, exemplified by the use of majolica, a painterly glazing style predominantly using in shades of blues and whites.

Over the course of two, six hour sessions, you’ll learn about the history of Portuguese traditional blue and white tiles, and the techniques you’ll need to create four traditional styles of Portuguese tile panels. Each short lesson will build upon the last to work up to one piece that includes the two major techniques. This workshop is open to all skill levels, whether you’re new to ceramics, or a seasoned artist interested in experimenting with more painterly glaze techniques for pots, tiles, or ceramic tile murals. Majolica is not as commonly used in the states, so this is a unique opportunity to learn from a classically trained Portuguese artist.

Sliding Scale Registration: $50-400
