A fun and exhilarating introduction to Traditional West African Dance with live drumming that fits perfectly with the dance moves you will be learning. Join choreographer and drummer Tyehimba Kokayi and learn a unique approach to an old-school tradition – it’s an opportunity to play with beautiful people and make a grouping of the community like no other.
The heart of this class are the elegant ways you will learn how to move your body. You will be introduced to the basics of West African Dance and various combinations. The movements you’ll learn will transform your heart, body and spirit. The techniques take a little practice, but it’s so rewarding! Need a little encouragement? You’ll receive enough movement training to create the great circular experience of weaving heart, body and mind and Tyehimba will be there already, warmed up and waiting for you and ready to dance. All materials (you, your body, your spirit!) are provided and included in the cost of the class. However, if you have a favorite lapa/fabric (light, free flowing and colorful work best!) or want specific colors – you are encouraged to bring them with you to the class.
