Enjoy the adventure of abstract painting – in encaustic! This wax-based medium carries pigment as well as the potential to convey meaning and metaphor. Students will learn how to set up the studio to begin working in encaustic; familiarize themselves with the materials, heat sources and tools; and learn a variety of mark making and textures using the methods presented – carving, scraping, dripping, layering and brushwork. Students are encouraged to explore personal topics of interest or choose from imagery and historical references covered in class
$25 materials fee due to the instructor at the beginning of class.
Kathleen Thompson holds a B.A. from UC Santa Barbara and completed graduate studies at Mills College with artist Jay DeFeo. She is a painting instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College and the Wellspring Center in Philo. Kathleen was awarded a Diebenkorn Scholarship at the Santa Fe Art Institute, a Gamblin Fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center, and residencies at the Montana Arts Refuge and Painting’s Edge in Idyllwild, CA, to name a few
