This workshop intends to demystify working with soft slabs and offers the essential components to creating unique slab built pots. Students will be introduced to the techniques of working with earthenware clay slabs and paper patterns. They will begin with simple functional forms and expand to include components such as lids, feet, and spouts as they explore darted cups and lidded pouring forms.

This workshop emphasizes one-on-one interaction in a supportive, positive environment where experimentation is encouraged and individual development nurtured. This workshop is designed to accommodate all clay enthusiasts from beginner to advanced.

Liz Zlot Summerfield


Liz Zlot Summerfield attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis to complete her MFA in 2004. Since graduation, she has lived and worked in Bakersville, North Carolina with her husband, glass artist Scott Summerfield.  They share a large outbuilding that houses each of their studios and a showroom for their work.

Liz has been featured and on the cover of Ceramics Monthly and Clay Times magazine as well as authored a variety of ceramic publications. In 2014, Ceramics Arts Daily released an instructional DVD featuring her construction and surface techniques.

Liz is the co-creator of Red Handed Symposium, a conference solely devoted to low-fire red clay enthusiasts.
