About the camp

Learn how to create comics and find your voice from New Yorker cartoonist Hilary Campbell! This one week camp will explore the importance of self expression through comics and cartoons. Students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of cartooning (from single panel to long form), how to find your humor through writing, and ultimately create their first zine.

  • Students will learn the basics of setting up single panel gag cartoons to multi-panel cartoon stories
  • How to create your character(s)
  • Finding your voice through humor
  • The practice of keeping a sketchbook
  • Telling your own story/story building
  • Creating your first zine
  • Learn a little about the business of cartooning/schooling they can go to after high school

About the instructor

Hilary Campbell

Instructor / Cartoonist

Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell is a New Yorker cartoonist, author, comedian and filmmaker. Her debut memoir Murder Book was awarded the best graphic novel of the year for the Midwest Publishing Awards of 2022. She has illustrated critically acclaimed books such as Feminist Fight Club and Are You My Uber? and her second memoir, The Joy of Snacking will hit the bookshelves in 2025. Campbell’s short documentaries This Is Not The End and Small Talk won awards at the top festivals in the country, before going on to become Vimeo Staff Picks. While Hilary resides in New York with her dog and a vast collection of Law & Order dvds, she is a Sonoma born artist, who is very excited to return home again to share the world of cartooning with students.

Julia Wetz

Instructor

Julia Wertz is a cartoonist, urban explorer, and amateur historian. Her latest graphic novels are Impossible People and Tenements, Towers & Trash. Her work is primarily autobiographical and appears regularly in the New Yorker and other publications. She lives in Sonoma with her partner and son.
