About the class

In this highly interactive poetry workshop, students will learn to live their senses out loud, recognize that they always have a place at the table to show up as their best selves, and get to know their voice through exercising “palate empowerment” to activate the creative mind.

Many of the poems that students consume and compose will embody themes of origin, roots, identity, and nostalgia. These themes guide how students engage with the world and drive the choices they make in their individual lives.

Each week, students will explore these themes through the nature of the line, repetition, image, voice, and space in the poems they read and ones they write and share together. Students will be encouraged to create new words in their poems as needed to express a thought, to write outside the form, and even into the margins or beyond the page.

All students will be provided with a packet of personally selected poems for the class and simply need to bring that with them, along with a pen or pencil they feel comfortable writing with and a poetry journal to compose their work in.

Please share any special considerations (medical, physical, learning) that will help your instructor make your class accessible and accommodating for you. You can share these considerations when register or by emailing Sean at sean@sonomacommunitycenter.org.

The Sonoma Community Center (the Center) strives to create an inclusive, safe community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. About the instructor

Karen Hannah

Instructor / Poet

I was a former poetry professor at Temple University from 2003-2006 and I also gained a wonderful education as the poetry buyer for City Lights Bookstore from 2001-2003. I started Zumbar Press to support the publication of small works of poetry or chapbooks through letterpress printing. And in addition to this, I’ve taught ESL to students in South Korea as well as privately tutored in the SF Bay Area. For the past six years, I have been creating empathetic wine experiences that embrace the core constructs of a poetry workshop to foster palate empowerment and outside-the-box thinking.
