Creative Movement & Dance: 9 – 9:40 AM

This class is designed as a young child’s first independent movement class. Instruction will include warm-ups exercises, basic elements of dance positions, across the floor movement, and a creative dance through the use of stories, props and games.  Age appropriate songs and dance forms from around the world are also incorporated into this class.

Benefits include listening skills and concentration, increased coordination, and an understanding of movement, i.e.  time, space, directions and balance, social skills and development of creativity.

An optional recital will be held the weekend of November 18th/19th. Time and Location TBA. A costume is a big part of the performance experience and little dancers love dressing up! They also love taking home their costumes to wear for dress up or as a keepsake. We do have a minimal costume fee of $45 which is yours for the taking after the show. You may pay at the time of registration or if you are unsure of participation in the recital at time of registration, you have the option to pay the fee by October 15th. This is to ensure  they arrive in plenty of time for performance. If you are in need of financial assistance for the costume or would like to pay it forward and sponsor another dancer’s costume  – please reach out to Molly Spencer at molly@sonomacommunity center.org. It takes a village!

Required Supplies:
Dance shoes, ballet slippers, grippy socks or barefoot are needed. We have new and gently used ballet slippers as well as grippy socks donated  and may have your child’s size. Please email Miss Molly at molly@sonomacommunitycenter.org to inquire.  Please no socks (grippy kind ok) or  just tights as the floor can be slippery. Comfortable clothing to move in  or dance wear such as leotards, skirts, skirted leotards and tights (with shoes) of any color or style. Please no tutus or pajamas in class. Hair pulled off of face. Dress in layers as it can go from chilly to warm fast! Being dressed and ready for class is part of the experience and encourages focus and participation.

Miss Molly Spencer

Instructor / Dancer

Molly Spencer otherwise known as “Miss Molly” started Miss Molly’s Pre Ballet & Dance in January 2015 and has taught hundreds of local children the joy of dancing, creating and performing!

She was Director of Novato School of Dance; a program of the Novato Parks and Recreation from 1999 to 2008. During that time presented three pre ballet recitals a year, a bi annual dance show for all Park and Rec Dance Classes, and choreographed and directed the children’s  ballet Peter and the Wolf. She has taught creative movement, pre ballet, ballet and modern/lyrical jazz to students ranging from 3 years old to adult!

Molly started her path right here in Sonoma at the Community Center then continued her studies as well as performing and choreographing with College of Marin and Santa Rosa Jr College. She studied with renowned teachers Jim May at DanceSpace and the Paul Taylor Dance Studio in New York City. Molly finds deep satisfaction teaching in her hometown!

When you register for a class, you’ll be offered three price tiers. The middle tier comes closest to what our registration fees used to be, and covers about 50% of the full cost of your participation in the class – with the other 50% covered by community donations. The first tier creates accessibility for people with limited income, while the third tier covers the full cost of participation – so that we can use community donations to support other people’s registration costs. When you choose to register at the third tier, you directly help support the Center’s efforts to remove financial barriers for others.

The Sonoma Community Center (the Center) strives to create an inclusive, safe community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The Center is committed to creating such an environment because it brings out the fullest potential in each of us, which, in turn, contributes directly to creating a community of belonging. In order to ensure a positive, safe, and welcoming experience for everyone, all program participants are asked to abide by the following policies, community agreements, and restorative safety protocol.
