About the class

This unique five-week course is designed for beginners in printmaking or anyone interested in learning and exploring the materials and techniques of modern intaglio printmaking. Drypoint is an intaglio printmaking method that involves scratching an image into a plate/matrix with a pointed tool. It is the simplest intaglio process because it does not involve the use of grounds (wax) or mordants (acid).

This course covers the distinct nature of printmaking including tools, inks, paper, plate preparation and registration. The start of printmaking begins with drawing and this course will also build on drawing skills. Using contemporary and historical perspectives and technical demonstrations, the student will learn a variety of drypoint processes on four different surfaces.

Over five weeks, students will learn to use traditional and alternative surfaces to create original intaglio print from start to finish by using easily accessible (and often) recycled materials. Learn to prepare different surfaces to use as a matrix. We will experiment with copper, recycled plastic packaging, recycled Tetra-Pak cartons, and plastic cutting board mats. Learn to engrave, incise, and texturize your plates, then ink and print with them. You will have hands-on experience in our studio to design and engrave your plates using an etching press, and creating hand-pulled editioned prints. No prior printmaking experience is necessary!

Please note: This class requires hand dexterity to maneuver a cutting tool. Participants should have strong enough motor skills to feel comfortable using a sharp blade safely.

Please share any special considerations (medical, physical, learning) that will help your instructor make your class accessible and accommodating for you. You can share these considerations when register or by emailing Sean at sean@sonomacommunitycenter.org.
