Glaze 101; Test Tiles and Glaze Test Types

June 30, 2023 @ 6:00 pm 9:00 pm

Strengthen your confidence and knowledge base navigating the dreaded glaze barn in these two session crash course on Glazing 101. In the first session students will learn, under the guidance of visiting artist Turiya Gross, how to create their own test tiles, test tile trays, and develop strong note taking skills to begin tracking their tests. In the second session, using the test tiles of their making, students will develop skills to create dip tests, brush tests, and overlapping glaze tests.

No more fretting over which glaze to choose on your next piece! With these new skills, you’ll feel comfortable and confident stepping into the Glaze Barn.

Turiya Gross

Artist / Instructor

Turiya Gross is a Ceramic Artist based out of Taos, New Mexico. Her work is inspired by the Ceramics she was exposed to in Mexico ( where she was born and raised) and by the experience of living at a Craft Community in Upstate New York where my brushwork developed by learning Folk Art Turkish motifs taught by an older Turkish man and by her travels and residencies. Turiya’s inspiration for surface and firing techniques are often based on pieces she see in museums (whether consciously or unconsciously) . She feels deeply connected to shapes and surfaces that can draw attention to the human touch and craftsmanship. In a world where we discard our single use objects, Turiya wants her work to help slow down our lives and appreciate a moment in time and space. She feels that the more we work with our hands to understand how things are made, the more we understand the effort spent in something well made and continue to bring

When you register for a class, you’ll be offered three price tiers. The middle tier comes closest to what our registration fees used to be, and covers about 50% of the full cost of your participation in the class – with the other 50% covered by community donations. The first tier creates accessibility for people with limited income, while the third tier covers the full cost of participation – so that we can use community donations to support other people’s registration costs. When you choose to register at the third tier, you directly help support the Center’s efforts to remove financial barriers for others.

The Sonoma Community Center (the Center) strives to create an inclusive, safe community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
