About the class

Following the Introduction to Oil Painting course, the next level will continue to reveal the secrets of the richness of the oil painting medium. We will begin to learn how to successfully design paintings through composition, guided color mixing, and creation of the illusion of spatial reality on the picture plane. This will involve a deeper exploration of the mediums of oil painting and application techniques such as glazing and using the palette knife. This course will also place emphasis on color harmony and simple color interaction.

  • Composition: Students will examine and learn to use composition armatures and discover the importance of Notan, the dynamic balance of light and dark.
  • Color Mixing: Students will continue to develop oil paint mixing skills on the palette and expand their color making technique. Emphasis will be placed on hue identification and mixing pigment color to match hue, value, and temperature.
  • Painting Design: This course will address landscape, seascape, still life, figurative, and architectural subjects.

Please note that this class uses solvent free, non-toxic methods of working with oil paint and studio hygiene.

The first tier creates accessibility for people with limited income, while the third tier covers the full cost of participation – so that we can use community donations to support other people’s registration costs. When you choose to register at the third tier, you directly help support the Center’s efforts to remove financial barriers for others.
