Pop Up – Brushwork Demo and Artist Talk w/ Visiting Artist Turiya Gross

Have you been eyeing Turiya Gross’s work as it moves through the kiln over the summer and wondering how she is able to capture such beautifully articulate lines with her brushwork?

Now is the perfect opportunity to learn how Turiya does her brushwork in this demo style workshop. Turiya will be demonstrating her own technique for brushwork, explaining technique and application style while also covering specific tool use and style.

After the demonstration, participants will have the opportunity to practice the new techniques on practice paper provided by the center, and get feedback from Turiya herself.

Turiya Gross will also have personal work available for sale during the demonstration; don’t miss out on this opportunity to purchase your very own Turiya Gross piece before she heads back to Taos, New Mexico.

Turiya Gross

Instructor / Artist

Turiya Gross is a Ceramic Artist based out of Taos, New Mexico. Her work is inspired by the Ceramics she was exposed to in Mexico (where she was born and raised) and by the experience of living at a Craft Community in Upstate New York where my brushwork developed by learning Folk Art Turkish motifs taught by an older Turkish man and by her travels and residencies. Turiya’s inspiration for surface and firing techniques are often based on pieces she sees in museums (whether consciously or unconsciously) . She feels deeply connected to shapes and surfaces that can draw attention to the human touch and craftsmanship. In a world where we discard our single use objects, Turiya wants her work to help slow down our lives and appreciate a moment in time and space. She feels that the more we work with our hands to understand how things are made, the more we understand the effort spent in something well made and continue to bring curiosity to all aspects of our lives.

When you register for a class, you’ll be offered three price tiers. The middle tier comes closest to what our registration fees used to be, and covers about 50% of the full cost of your participation in the class – with the other 50% covered by community donations. The first tier creates accessibility for people with limited income, while the third tier covers the full cost of participation – so that we can use community donations to support other people’s registration costs. When you choose to register at the third tier, you directly help support the Center’s efforts to remove financial barriers for others.

The Sonoma Community Center (the Center) strives to create an inclusive, safe community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The Center is committed to creating such an environment because it brings out the fullest potential in each of us, which, in turn, contributes directly to creating a community of belonging. In order to ensure a positive, safe, and welcoming experience for everyone, all program participants are asked to abide by the following policies, community agreements, and restorative safety protocol.
