About the class

Explore pop-up book design with artist Hannah Day. This unique class will explore simple book arts by introducing participants to the basic foundational structure and creative techniques to craft a fun and engaging handmade artistic pop-up book. Students will learn foundational “folds” for pop up elements in book making and then dream up an imaginative and playful way to use those simple devices using paper cutting to create images in their own artist designed book.

With an introduction to paper cutting technique, students will expand on their designs and create something enchanting. Artists will have some multimedia options if they wish to adorn their pop up elements and book pages (such as watercolor, colored pencils, etc), or may opt to let the cut paper speak for itself.

In this four week evening course, we will cover: the basic rules underlying pop up mechanics, beginning pop up “folds”, proper knife handling, and foundational paper cutting skills and theory. This course is suitable for anyone interested in exploring these topics, as well as mixed media, visual storytelling, and the whimsical magic of creating precious paper ephemera. No prior experience in Book Arts is required.
Please note: This class requires hand dexterity to maneuver a cutting tool. Participants should have strong enough motor skills to feel comfortable using a sharp blade safely.

Please share any special considerations (medical, physical, learning) that will help your instructor make your class accessible and accommodating for you. You can share these considerations when register or by emailing Sean at sean@sonomacommunitycenter.org.
