Reniel Del Rosario (b. Iba, Philippines) is an artist that primarily uses ceramics, quantity, and satire to discuss themes of commodification and value—historical, cultural, and monetary. His projects range from interactive mimicries of consumer establishments, reimaginings of artifacts, and imperfect copies of already-existing objects. He holds a BA in Art Practice from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a 2019 recipient of the Center for Craft’s Windgate-Lamar fellowship, an invited artist to the 2022 SFMOMA Artists Soapbox Derby, a 2022 SECA nominee, and has been featured in writings such as ARTFORUM and Bon Appetit Mag. In addition to private collections, he is set to complete a permanent installation at Meta headquarters later this month through Meta Open Arts. His work has been exhibited internationally through traditional and alternative venues such as West Coast Craft, untitled Art Fair, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, other places Art Fair, Catharine Clark Gallery, Load Na Dito, Root Division, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and simply on the public sidewalk. From Reniel himself; “During my time at Sonoma Ceramics, I will be continuing my pursuit into the value of objects, but using the residency’s facilities to further that investigation with new interests in scale and assemblage. Utilizing and looking at museum archives, art trends, anthropology, and pop culture, I will be combining elements, interpretations, parts, and pieces of objects from these areas and creating sculptures that critique, comment, combine, and poke fun at the battlefield that is history and categorization. There are no idealized finished works in mind—they will reveal themselves as new information and inspiration trickle in with each dive into the overvalued and undervalued.”
