About the Exhibit
Sonoma, California. Gallery 212 at the Sonoma Community Center will host an opening reception for Barbara White Perry’s exhibit Drawing Sonoma on Saturday, March 1st. Sixty hand-touched ink and charcoal images will be on display and available for purchase through Thursday, March 27th. She began Drawing Sonoma in 1999.
In March 2015, Barbara White Perry held a month-long exhibit in Gallery 212 at Sonoma Community Center. “The show was extremely well attended,” she said. “Many people in attendance encouraged me to create a book of my illustrations with stories of each property’s past.”
That book, Drawing Sonoma, now in its third edition, is a collection of seventy-three ink and vine-charcoal illustrations exploring the historic properties of Sonoma Valley. Perry says this will be the last published edition of the series of documenting the Valley.
“Absent traffic, power lines, curbs, gutters, and sidewalks, her illustrations capture the soul and character of the shops and homes of Sonomans who made our Valley of the Moon what it is, long before modern distractions obscured that vision,” said Bill Lynch, Editor Emeritus, The Sonoma Index-Tribune. “The last lovely vestiges still exist and are beautifully memorialized in Barbara’s art.”
The perfect way to close this chapter of her life is to sell the framed, hand-touched illustrations in an exhibit at Sonoma Community Center, where the idea was born.
“Gallery 212 is the most beautiful place to show art in Sonoma County,” Perry added. “I am happy to celebrate my art 10 years later in the same space and, make people happy.”
Drawing Sonoma will open with a reception on March 1st from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in Gallery 212 at the Center. The entire collection exhibited and the Drawing Sonoma books will be for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Center. The exhibit will be open Monday – Friday 9 AM – 5 PM through March 27th. Sonoma Community Center is located at 276 East Napa Street in Sonoma. Visit SonomaCommunityCenter.org for more information.
Barbara White Perry has been painting and drawing since a child growing up along the Fox River in St. Charles, Illinois. She has lived in California over 48 years and calls Sonoma Valley her home. The vistas of the Valley especially historic properties, old barns and unusual structures inspire her.
In 1999, 26 years ago, Barbara began documenting Sonoma Valley’s historic and unique properties with ink and vine-charcoal illustrations. She researched information and wrote stories for each property. White Perry began calling the work Drawing Sonoma. She soon discovered that familiar barns or unusual properties and vistas were disappearing. A new chapter was created. Gone But Not Forgotten documents structures and vistas forever lost.
Ten years ago, March 2015, White Perry held a month-long exhibit in Gallery 212. The show was well attended and many people encouraged her to create a book.
Drawing Sonoma, now in its third edition, will be the last published edition of the series. The exhibit, March 1 through March 27th in Gallery 212 will be her last, where the idea was born.
Barbara White Perry was named Sonoma Treasure Artist by the City of Sonoma’s Cultural and Fine Arts Commission. The Commission not only noted her accomplishments as a painter, illustrator and author, but her numerous contributions to the community.
