About the class

Here is a unique opportunity to learn from Veronika Schäpers, visiting artist from Germany, whose work is included in Book Becoming Art, on display at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art from January 18-April 27.

In this workshop we combine the structure of a Jacob’s ladder with the traditional paper size “tanzaku 短冊”, a long, thin strip of paper which, nowadays, people normally use to write wishes on and hang up for display. The Jacob’s Ladder Book is a simple but refined way to insert the slim format of tanzaku strips into a book-like structure, offering a surprising variety of combinations and almost magical insights. We will fold and cut the basic structure first, into simple rectangles or other free geometric forms. Based on this structure we will stencil a repeating motif on the paper strips, after creating a unique stencil composed of straight lines or dots up to floral forms.

Students are encouraged to tour the SVMA exhibition after the workshop to see more of Veronika’s work.
