About the class

This 3 day workshop is an introduction to mid-range soda firing, with hands-on training int he rpocess of loading, firing, and maintaining SOnoma Ceramics crossdraft kiln named “julia”. This workshop includes instruction on glazing, wadding the ceramic pieces, loading the kiln, firing the kiln, and kiln maintenance.

Each participant gets 1 cubic foot of firing space. From time of registration until the workshop, participants receive full member access to Sonoma Ceramics facilities in order to make work for the workshop.
Clay must be purchased through Sonoma Ceramics.
There will be a designated bisque firing for the workshop before the soda kiln is fired.

**This workshop is a prerequisite requirement to be able to join our Soda Club; a community led group firing the soda kiln without specific instructional support.

After attending this course, and with approval from the Director of Ceramics, you may qualify to participate in our Soda Firing Club, a community led group trained in firing the soda kiln with support from our Studio Technician, but without the support of full time instructor.

Each participant gets 1 cubic foot of firing space.
(Tip; Make sure all your pots fit approximately into a milk crate which is 1 cubic foot of space).

This firing will be a reduction fired cone 6 with sprayed soda at the end.

About the instructor

Ddan Clauson

Instructor / Artist

Daniel is a Queer and Trans Artist focusing mostly in ceramics. Dan utilizes their past experiences of gender dysphoria, relationships, and ‘home’ to influence their work. Connecting contradicting ideas of love and pain, trauma and acceptance, intimacy and ambiguity. From the University of Washington, Daniel received a Bachelors in Art in the 3D4M department, as well as a minor in Art History. Daniel has attended both the University of Colorado (Boulder) and the University of Arkansas (Fayetteville) as a Post Baccalaureate in ceramics. This past Fall, they were one of the 2022 artists in residences at Anderson Ranch Arts Center.

  • Participant has little to no experience with this medium and needs or expects guidance at every step during the class. Participant wants to learn about materials, techniques, and vocabulary of the medium.

  • Participant is comfortable with the medium and expects both guidance and time to work alone with the medium.
  • Advanced
  • Participant is very confident with all aspects of the medium. Participant is self-motivated; ready to experiment and develop their artistic voice.

We ask that you notify us at least 10 business days in advance of a class if you need to cancel your registration. You may cancel by phone or email and we will gladly offer you a refund or credit toward a future class. If you cancel with less than 10 business days notice, we will not be able to provide a full refund. A flat cancellation fee of $15 will be charged to cover the transaction fee.

Sometimes, the Sonoma Community Center has to cancel a class due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or health emergency. If this happens and we do not offer a reschedule date, you will be refunded 100% of your registration fee (minus the payment processing and services fee), or credit towards a future class. If we are able to offer a reschedule date but you are unable to make the new date, we will gladly offer credit towards a future class.

All credits must be used within 1 year.

Late additions to any program, class, or workshop that has already begun will be allowed on a per-case basis depending upon the Program Director & instructors approval. Late additions will have to pay the full registration cost of the class, along with any materials fees, and will not be prorated for the time missed. You may reach out to the program directors directly, or the Program Associate Sean Baskin at sean@sonomacommunitycenter.org to request a late addition.
