Home Again, Home Again Exhibit by One Beach Plastic
An exhibit in the Center’s Gallery 212 by Richard Lang & Judith Selby Lang
Sonoma, California. Sonoma Community Center is hosting a reception during the October 1 Sonoma Art Walk for “Home Again, Home Again,” a new exhibit by One Beach Plastic. The exhibit will be open in Gallery 212 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It will remain open daily until Sunday, November 1. Light refreshments will be served.
One Beach Plastic is a collaborative project of married couple Richard Lang and Judith Selby Lang. It was inspired by their first date in 1999, while walking on Kehoe Beach at the end of Point Reyes National Seashore. They remember both reaching for a piece of plastic in the sand, simultaneously asking, “Are you going to keep that?”
The couple continued to visit this stretch of beach for nearly 30 years, collecting over two tons of plastic materials. They create artworks that let the material speak plainly for itself.
“Our work is an effort at planetary housekeeping,” the couple said in an artist statement. “Picking up, sorting, washing, arranging, and transforming what has been left behind… there is something humble and almost domestic about this work.”
The Langs collect and curate bits of found plastic into works of art that matter-of-factly show the material as it is. Their work has been featured in over 70 exhibitions, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and Hong Kong’s Ocean Film Festival. Now they bring their message to Sonoma Valley.
“The title ‘Home Again, Home Again’ carries a double meaning,” the statement continued. “It speaks to the desire to return to a place that feels familiar and cared for, while reminding us that there is no separate place to return to. This is our home. The ocean, the shoreline, the rivers, and the landscapes around us are not somewhere else- they are part of the same household.”
Gallery 212 at the Sonoma Community Center is open from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. A reception with light refreshments will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, during the Sonoma Art Walk. Admission is free, and the exhibit will be on view through Sunday, November 1. For more information, go to sonomacommunitycenter.org or call 707-938-4626.
