Illuminated: Sculptural Lantern Workshop
Visiting artist to teach 3 community workshops at the Center
Sonoma, California. Sonoma Community Center welcomes artist Valerie Seaburg to teach lantern-making workshops. The first two sessions will be family-friendly on Saturday, September 20, with a two-day workshop for adults on Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27. The Center is able to keep registration low for participants thanks to the generous support of KHR McNeely Family Foundation. The family class is just $10 per person while the adult workshop is $60 with all materials included.
Seaberg is a Wyoming-based artist who also calls Sebastopol home. She describes herself as “an ocean child destined for mountain life.”
“We live in such fast times,” Seaberg said, “and there is something so wonderfully grounding and satisfying about slowing down, sitting together, and making things with our hands. People have been gathering this way for thousands of years; to make, talk, eat, laugh, share stories, and create something together.”
The “Friends and Family” classes on Saturday, September 20, will be an informal, intergenerational day focused on small lanterns and simple crafts. There are two three-hour sessions available, the first at 10:00 a.m. and the second begins at 2:00 p.m. Children are welcome with adult participation.
The weekend workshop for adults will take place over Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27. These lanterns will be more complex and sculptural, using willow, bamboo, reed, paper, and other sustainable materials. While those items are included, participants are invited to bring meaningful images, poems, or other small materials to inspire their design.
“This workshop is an open invitation to come play with light, make a sculptural lantern, and enjoy the simple pleasure of creating alongside other people,” Seaberg added.
