Illustrated Storytelling, the Sonoma Plaza History Tour
Plaza history storyteller, Jim Silverman, to present in Andrews Hall
Sonoma, California. On Wednesday, October 15, at 6:45 p.m., come to the Center for a Sonoma Plaza history tour unlike any you’ve experienced. It’s on stage in Andrews Hall. Historical storyteller Jim Silverman will share stories set to art, animation, photos, and video, as we visit a familiar place in a new light.
The tour recognizes early technologies that changed local tribal life: acorn diets, basket making, and bows and arrows. But it was the sounds of squeaking ox cart wheels, bronze bells ringing, and gunfire, plus the sight of the Mexicans and their farm animals, that meant their world was about to change. That was some 200 years ago.
Silverman’s stories explore the past with Mike Acker’s “Portrait of Sonoma Plaza History,” a ghostly, complex panorama of the four streets keyed to 19th-century street maps. Max Simonet’s animations add levity. So, combined with images of the Plaza today, the tour travels through time. For example, a blacksmith and wagon shop stood where Mary’s Pizza Shack is today on Spain Street.
Passionate about connecting people with a sense of place and community, Silverman produced SonomaPlazaHistoryTour.org with Sonoma Community Center. The self-guided tour offers 24 stories about natural history, wine heritage, special buildings, and personal memories, plus a view of history through art. It includes architectural coloring pages and word puzzles for families.
