| | Lunar New Year Free Community CelebrationSaturday, March 7, 12-3 PM, FREE!Welcome to the Year of the Fire Dragon! Saturday’s third annual Lunar New Year Free Community Celebration is this Saturday, and it looks like the weather will be beautiful. The forecast calls for 75 degrees and sun.
From noon to 1 PM, join us in Room 110 at the Center for kids’ art projects and demonstrations. Aside from the traditional Chinese calligraphy and mahjong demonstrations, we have just confirmed that Henry Kaku, a local origami master, will be joining us.
Food vendors will be behind the Center from noon to 3 PM. Entertainment from Hula Mai and Redwood Empire Chinese Association will be on the back patio beginning at 1 PM. Remember- it’s customary to tip the lion and dragon dancers using red envelopes called lai see. Bring your singles, and we will provide the lai see for you to “feed” the performers. |

| | Tales of the Old Sea Dog- a look at Captain William SmithWednesday, March 18, 5 PM, $5/$10Sonoma Community Center’s Andrews Hall
In this one-hour talk and PowerPoint presentation, we look at the Pacific coast’s most colorful and enduring sailor of the early 19th century. Buried in a “special place” in Sonoma’s Mountain View Cemetery, Captain William Smith arrived on the Pacific coast in 1792 and, until 1819, sailed in the sea otter trade. Click here for tickets. |
