An Important Message About Dia de Muertos
Saturday, November 2, 6 PM at the Center
The Sonoma Community Center will hold its Dia de Muertos altar lighting, as scheduled, on Saturday, November 1 at 6:00 p.m. We welcome the community to join us in remembering those who have passed while viewing the Center’s public altars, the Community Butterfly Exhibit, and visiting the gallery featuring the work of artist Adrián Arias.
The Center has made the difficult decision to cancel the other festivities that had been planned for November 1st. We made this decision after consulting with community members and in acknowledgment of the uncertainty and fear in our community and across our country.
As always, we will look to the healing power of art, creativity, and community to respond to the needs of this time. The Dia classes begin on October 24th with Pan de Muerto and continue through October 30th with Paint Night.
Our butterfly exhibit features hundreds of butterflies colored by our diverse community with handwritten dreams and wishes for our collective future. The butterflies symbolize resilience, beauty, hope, and migration, and are a representation of our connection to each other.
As a community center, we are a safe space for all Sonomans to gather, learn, and grow. It is against our mission and values to in any way endanger or cause anxiety for our community. We stand with all of Sonoma to support each other in respect, care, kindness, and dignity.
