“Print Day in May”
Sonoma Community Center to Host Visiting Artists for a Symposium.
Sonoma, California. The Sonoma Community Center Print Studio will host a community day of print-focused live art demonstrations led by four talented local Bay Area artists in celebration of “Print Day in May.” On Saturday, May 2, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., participating artists will each lead two printmaking demonstrations throughout the day. This schedule allows attendees to experience a session with every visiting artist while exploring a range of modern printmaking techniques, including surface design and Japanese papermaking. Early bird pricing is $40 through Friday, April 24.
“Print Day in May” is celebrated each year on the first Saturday in May by printmakers and art enthusiasts around the world. Since 2007, the event has highlighted the art and community of printmaking. It’s a day when many artists gather to share their passion by creating prints, exchanging ideas, and demonstrating techniques to engage and inspire new audiences.
This “Print Day in May” celebration is a unique opportunity to connect and be part of a lively, artist-led event rooted in the spirit of honoring printmaking. The festivities will include hands-on activities, artist talks, Q&A sessions, and end with a mix & mingle happy hour party with homemade pizza in the Sonoma Community Center’s Secret Garden.
The presenting guest artists are Mark Brodie, Eileen Parent, Barbara Schwartzberg, and Michelle Wilson. Printmaking artist Mark Brodie will share his intaglio technique by printing solar plates with chine-collé. College printmaking professor, Eileen Parent, will demonstrate Tetra-Pak® printmaking, a modern version of intaglio using upcycled plastic surfaces. Ceramicist Barbara Schwartzberg will show her carved linocut relief work on clay surfaces, and interdisciplinary artist and papermaker Michelle Wilson will share her Japanese papermaking washi fiber techniques.
“Print Day in May is an excuse to share our love of print with a broader audience,” said Kelly Autumn, artist and Printmaking Coordinator for the Center. “It’s rare for printmakers to be able to gather together on a weekend and educate folks about our creative passion and all the interesting printmaking techniques out there! We are so happy to be able to host an event in Sonoma Valley and carry on a special tradition started by PDIM founder Robynn Smith.”
Proceeds from the Printmaking Symposium support the participating demonstrating artists, the Sonoma Community Center’s Printmaking Studio, and scholarship programs that ensure access for all.
