Barbies & Bags Workshop
Transform plastic dolls and create upcycled bags from trash into unique art. Join our hands-on Trashion workshop for the Gallery 212 Exhibit and Auction.
About the Class
This hands-on workshop invites participants to rescue and reinvent plastic dolls (Barbies, Kens, and dolls that are under 12 inches) often destined for landfills, where they can take 20 to 500 years to decompose. As part of Trashion Season, join us for the beloved Gallery 212 Exhibit and Auction (April 3 – 25) where discarded materials are transformed into small-scale works of art for a good cause. Together, we’ll reclaim these forgotten figures and reimagine them as expressive, one-of-a-kind artworks for submission to the gallery exhibit and auction.
New this year: Bags! In addition to dolls, we’re expanding the exhibit to include bags—think totes, clutches, cross bagsm fanny packs, coin purses, and backpacks. Just like the Trashion runway, the only rule is that your piece must be made from unconventional materials and/or upcycled/used textiles.
Participants will have access to access to sewing machines, hot glue guns, irons, hair dryers and other creative tools
as well of a wide selection of trash and upcycled materials to bring their vision to life. BYOT (Bring your own trash) is also welcome and encouraged!
The workshop registration is your application fee to the gallery exhibit!
Come play, experiment, and collaborate while contributing to a dynamic gallery exhibit that raises funds for Sonoma Community Center programming through the auction. It’s a joy to see your art find a new home—and to be part of a creative community turning trash into treasure.

About your Instructor
Molly Spencer
Molly Spencer is the Director of Engagement at the Sonoma Community Center which runs the broad spectrum at the Center from directing Trashion Fashion events, podcasting, and leading the dance and movement programming to name a few. She is excited to bring more of the storytelling aspect to the Trashion Fashion Design Class for Kids & Teens. She brings her experience in podcasting, radio as well as directing, choreographing and teaching children and teens dance recitals and ballets for over 20 years. She is excited to share how to express the individuality of the young designers and models to help them develop a story and character using the visual elements of trash and fashion. With behind the scenes experience of the Trashion Runway show, she also shares what to expect and how to help keep calm and find self confidence from this unique experience. Molly also expresses her Trashion creativity through Trashion Barbies Gallery Exhibit since its inception in 2017!

Class FAQ
We ask that you notify us at least 10 days in advance of a class if you need to cancel your registration. You may cancel by phone or email and we will gladly offer you a refund or credit toward a future class. If you cancel with less than 10 days’ notice, we will not be able to provide refunds, due to our contractual obligations and material purchases for each class.
Sometimes, the Sonoma Community Center has to cancel a class due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or health emergency. If this happens and we do not offer a reschedule date, you will be refunded 100% of your registration fee (minus the payment processing and services fee), or credit towards a future class. If we are able to offer a reschedule date but you are unable to make the new date, we will gladly offer credit towards a future class.
All credits must be used within 1 year.

The Sonoma Community Center is committed to creating an accessible learning environment. If you require any special considerations(medical, physical, learning) please share them with Sean Baskin, Program Associate, by emailing him at [email protected] so that he can forward them to the relevant Program Director and Instructor.
Late additions to any program, class, or workshop that has already begun will be allowed on a per-case basis depending upon the Program Director & instructors approval. Late additions will have to pay the full registration cost of the class, along with any materials fees, and will not be prorated for the time missed.
