Crochet Innovations: Exploring Form
Explore sculptural crochet in this guided workshop. Learn expansion, contraction, merging; create small freeform pieces.
About the Class
Join us for an exploration of the innovative possibilities within crochet! This workshop invites you to delve into the sculptural aspects of the craft while creating freeform sculptures. Drawing inspiration from a rich tradition, you will be introduced to a variety of techniques that I’ve learned and developed over the years in my own artistic practice. Guided throughout the process, you will utilize essential materials such as yarn and crochet hook to learn the basics of expansion, contraction, elongating, merging corners, and adding on. Whether for your own unique sculptures, or incorporating into your mixed media projects, by the end of the workshop you can expect to take home a few small finished pieces or work samples to inspire further creativity. A basic understanding of crochet is recommended.
Please Bring the Following to the Workshop:
- Crochet hook size 2.5
- 2 skeins (different colors) of a Pima 100 cotton, wound and ready to stitch.

About your Instructor
Esther Traugot
Esther Traugot’s installations include crocheted wrappings in and around found natural objects with hand-dyed golden yarns, eliciting both a vibrant warmth and intimacy with her objects. As in gilding, the tiny golden stitches build up as form-fitting skins, blankets, or fill empty cracks, bringing attention to their fragility and implying an intrinsic value. Touching on narratives both personal and universal, she investigates a personal relationship with the natural world. Her experiences growing up very close to nature influence her interest in the dichotomies in seeing oneself as an intrinsic part of nature and living in the modern world.
Since receiving her BFA from the University of California Berkeley in 2005, and her MFA from Mills College in 2009, she has shown extensively in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. She has been commissioned for the permanent collections of Neiman Marcus in Walnut Creek and Beverly Hills, and for private clients.
Esther Traugot is represented by Muriel Guepin Gallery in NY, and Chandra Cerrito Art Advisors in the Bay Area, CA, and currently lives and works in Northern California.

Class FAQ
We ask that you notify us at least 10 days in advance of a class if you need to cancel your registration. You may cancel by phone or email and we will gladly offer you a refund or credit toward a future class. If you cancel with less than 10 days’ notice, we will not be able to provide refunds, due to our contractual obligations and material purchases for each class.
Sometimes, the Sonoma Community Center has to cancel a class due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or health emergency. If this happens and we do not offer a reschedule date, you will be refunded 100% of your registration fee (minus the payment processing and services fee), or credit towards a future class. If we are able to offer a reschedule date but you are unable to make the new date, we will gladly offer credit towards a future class.
All credits must be used within 1 year.

Late additions to any program, class, or workshop that has already begun will be allowed on a per-case basis depending upon the Program Director & instructors approval. Late additions will have to pay the full registration cost of the class, along with any materials fees, and will not be prorated for the time missed.
