Introduction to Raku Processes; Pre-req for Raku Workshops
No-fire intro to Raku ceramics: history, materials, safety, hands-on sculpting, and a full kiln dry run. Preps you for the firing course.
program overview
This workshop is specifically designed for complete beginners who want to explore Raku ceramics. It serves as a foundational step for anyone intending to register for Azelia’s subsequent Raku Firing course.
This introductory class is focused on preparation and theory and will not include an actual firing of the Raku kiln. The emphasis is on building the knowledge base and technical understanding for a successful firing experience.
In this workshop we will look at the history and philosophy of Raku. We will explore the materials, such as glazes and clay, that will set you up for success. We will also talk about safety and personal protection to bring while firing the kiln. This workshop will have a hands-on component, where we will create sculptural work to bisque for the upcoming firing with Azelia.
We will conduct a thorough “dry run” simulation of the entire Raku firing sequence. This demonstration will cover every step, from loading the kiln using tongs and placing the piece into the reduction chamber (e.g., metal can with combustibles).

Azelia Mazur
My name is Azelia Mazur, but some folks call me “Zay” for short. I am a multi-disciplinary artist, dabbling in many mediums, such as photography, sculpture, and writing. In my creative work, I am interested in world-building, storytelling, and process.

Class FAQ
We ask that you notify us at least 10 days in advance of a class if you need to cancel your registration. You may cancel by phone or email and we will gladly offer you a refund or credit toward a future class. If you cancel with less than 10 days’ notice, we will not be able to provide refunds, due to our contractual obligations and material purchases for each class.
Sometimes, the Sonoma Community Center has to cancel a class due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or health emergency. If this happens and we do not offer a reschedule date, you will be refunded 100% of your registration fee (minus the payment processing and services fee), or credit towards a future class. If we are able to offer a reschedule date but you are unable to make the new date, we will gladly offer credit towards a future class.
All credits must be used within 1 year.

Late additions to any program, class, or workshop that has already begun will be allowed on a per-case basis depending upon the Program Director & instructors approval. Late additions will have to pay the full registration cost of the class, along with any materials fees, and will not be prorated for the time missed.
