Sold Out – Introduction to Reduction Linocut
Learn reduction relief printmaking with artist Tomoko Murakami. A 4-week workshop on carving, inking, and multi-color prints from one lino block.
program overview
In this special four-week workshop, participants will explore the unique art of reduction relief printmaking. Acclaimed guest artist, Tomoko Murakami, will demonstrate how to create multi-color prints from a single linoleum block. The main idea is to gradually carve away parts of the block and print each new layer of color, with each layer building on the previous one. The course covers the entire process, from designing and planning, to carving techniques, inking, registration, and printing with both hand and printing press methods. Participants will learn to explore the possibilities of color mixing and layering, enabling students to achieve intricate designs and a wide range of visual effects. You will gain an understanding of the materials, processes, and innovations involved in this unique form of relief print printing!
All levels are welcome, including continuing linocut students.
Please note: This class requires hand dexterity to maneuver the carving tool. Participants should feel comfortable standing, and using tools with sharp blades and edges.
instructor Overview
Tomoko Murakami
Tomoko Murakami received her MFA in Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute and her MA in Transformative Arts from John F. Kennedy University. She is a Registered Expressive Arts Educator (REACE) with the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association and a certified SoulCollage® facilitator.
An award-winning Bay Area artist, Tomoko creates immersive installations and works in both traditional and contemporary printmaking. She has taught, demonstrated, and lectured at California College of the Arts, Santa Rosa Junior College, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Legion of Honor, and numerous community art centers throughout the Bay Area.
With over 35 years of experience as an art conservator specializing in Asian paintings, she brings deep respect for traditional materials and techniques to her work. In her teaching, Tomoko integrates technical skill with embodied awareness, guiding artists to deepen their creative voice and expand their imaginative freedom.

Class FAQ
We ask that you notify us at least 10 days in advance of a class if you need to cancel your registration. You may cancel by phone or email and we will gladly offer you a refund or credit toward a future class. If you cancel with less than 10 days’ notice, we will not be able to provide refunds, due to our contractual obligations and material purchases for each class.
Sometimes, the Sonoma Community Center has to cancel a class due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or health emergency. If this happens and we do not offer a reschedule date, you will be refunded 100% of your registration fee (minus the payment processing and services fee), or credit towards a future class. If we are able to offer a reschedule date but you are unable to make the new date, we will gladly offer credit towards a future class.
All credits must be used within 1 year.

Late additions to any program, class, or workshop that has already begun will be allowed on a per-case basis depending upon the Program Director & instructors approval. Late additions will have to pay the full registration cost of the class, along with any materials fees, and will not be prorated for the time missed.
