About the Class
In this introductory workshop, journey into the world of linocut printmaking by exploring nature and the foundational principles and techniques used in block printing.
In this class, participants will begin with a short nature photo walk at the Sonoma Garden Park for field inspiration. Students will then head into the printmaking studio where they will have the opportunity to explore block printing through a series of exercises geared towards converting a photograph or a pencil sketch into a contemporary linoleum print. Guests will learn to carve and print a 4 x 6 inch rubber block using a carving tool, and non-toxic water-soluble inks to create a small series of creative block prints and hand-printed cards with a variety of paper choices.
No experience is required. This is a fun day of art and guided process, which will take you step by step. This workshop is great for anyone new to relief block carving, and for those who may already have some beginning experience in printmaking they want to expand on. Whether you’re new to print, or looking to expand your skills, this hands-on workshop offers a supportive space to create something truly one-of-a-kind.
Please Note
This class requires walking as well as hand dexterity to maneuver the carving tools. Participants should feel comfortable using tools with sharp blades and edges.
About your Instructor
Kelly Autumn
Kelly Autumn is an Asian American visual artist and multidisciplinary printmaker based in Sonoma County. Raised in Santa Rosa and deeply rooted in the Bay Area, Kelly is a passionate arts educator with a natural curiosity for combining traditional print methods with an experimental mixed-media approach. Kelly received her BA degree from San Francisco State University and an AA degree in Studio Arts with emphasis in Printmaking from Diablo Valley College. She currently leads the Printmaking Department as a studio instructor and Program Coordinator at the Sonoma Community Center where she enjoys sharing her love of print with folks of all ages. Kelly currently serves on the Board of Directors of the California Society of Printmakers and her work has been featured in various public exhibitions throughout the Bay Area.

Class FAQ
We ask that you notify us at least 10 days in advance of a class if you need to cancel your registration. You may cancel by phone or email and we will gladly offer you a refund or credit toward a future class. If you cancel with less than 10 days’ notice, we will not be able to provide refunds, due to our contractual obligations and material purchases for each class.
Sometimes, the Sonoma Community Center has to cancel a class due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or health emergency. If this happens and we do not offer a reschedule date, you will be refunded 100% of your registration fee (minus the payment processing and services fee), or credit towards a future class. If we are able to offer a reschedule date but you are unable to make the new date, we will gladly offer credit towards a future class.
All credits must be used within 1 year.

Late additions to any program, class, or workshop that has already begun will be allowed on a per-case basis depending upon the Program Director & instructors approval. Late additions will have to pay the full registration cost of the class, along with any materials fees, and will not be prorated for the time missed.
