Oil Painting Atelier
About the Class
This intensive course provides customized mentorship designed to guide students through the creation of a self-described oil painting project. The structure is ideal for painters who have completed a foundational course and wish to apply those skills, as well as experienced artists seeking specialized technical solutions.
- Who is this for? Any student who has completed a basic oil painting introduction and is ready to work on a self-directed piece.
- Consultation: Private Project Consultation (With Instructor before class starts): You will discuss your project idea. The instructor will ensure the goals are realistic and appropriate for your current skill level-whether you are working on mastering basic layering or tackling advanced composition-and establish a clear work plan tailored to the studio setting and timeframe.
- Sessions Weekly: Work actively on your project in the studio. The instructor will provide weekly, individualized critiques and problem-solving assistance. For newer painters, this guidance might focus on proper material handling or foundational techniques. For advanced students, it will tackle complex technical or expressive issues.
- Essential Materials List
- Paints: A full set of artist-grade oil colors (minimum of 8 colors, including Titanium White and Burnt Umber).
- Brushes: A variety of flat, bright, and round hog bristle or synthetic brushes suitable for oil (sizes #4, #8, #12 recommended).
- Mediums: Linseed Oil (or similar non-toxic oil medium). No solvents allowed.
- Surfaces: Minimum of 8 primed canvas panels (9×12 or 11×14) for projects.
- Cleaning: Personal supply of Safflower Oil, Linseed Oil Soap, and a final brush soap (to adhere to studio policy).
- Other: Palette knife, rags, gloves, and containers for cleaning oils.
Outcome: Focused, actionable feedback tailored specifically to your developmental needs and project goals.
Prerequisite: Completion of an introductory oil painting course or equivalent foundational experience.

Michael Bartlett
Michael E. Bartlett – an artist of the west. Has practiced fine and commercial arts for over 50 years. An award-winning oil painter of landscapes and coastal scenes, master craftsman and innovator, from Montana, working now in Northern California, lives paints and teaches in Sonoma, California. Member of the California Art Club and Oil Painters of America.

Class FAQ
We ask that you notify us at least 10 days in advance of a class if you need to cancel your registration. You may cancel by phone or email and we will gladly offer you a refund or credit toward a future class. If you cancel with less than 10 days’ notice, we will not be able to provide refunds, due to our contractual obligations and material purchases for each class.
Sometimes, the Sonoma Community Center has to cancel a class due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or health emergency. If this happens and we do not offer a reschedule date, you will be refunded 100% of your registration fee (minus the payment processing and services fee), or credit towards a future class. If we are able to offer a reschedule date but you are unable to make the new date, we will gladly offer credit towards a future class.
All credits must be used within 1 year.

The Sonoma Community Center is committed to creating an accessible learning environment. Late additions to any program, class, or workshop that has already begun will be allowed on a per-case basis depending upon the Program Director & instructors approval. Late additions will have to pay the full registration cost of the class, along with any materials fees, and will not be prorated for the time missed.
