Sculptural Crochet: Wrapped Stones

Explore the creative possibilities of crocheting over three-dimensional objects in this hands-on workshop. Drawing inspiration from sculptural fiber art, you’ll learn how crochet can transform ordinary stones into unique, form-fitting works of art.
Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of crocheting around 3D forms, including creating a magic circle, increasing and decreasing stitches, and working single and double crochet stitches to accommodate changing shapes, contours, and open spaces. Using yarn, a crochet hook, and a smooth stone, you’ll learn techniques for creating a custom crochet “cozy” that highlights the stone’s natural form while exploring texture, structure, and surface.
Throughout the workshop, you’ll receive guided instruction while developing an understanding of how crochet responds to organic shapes. You’ll complete a crocheted stone while building techniques that can be adapted to a wide range of three-dimensional forms.
Stones and a selection of suitable yarns are provided. Bring your favorite crochet hooks in the 2.5–2.75 mm range (US B-1 to C-2) if you have them, or explore the hooks available in the studio during the workshop.
Prerequisite: Participants should be comfortable with basic crochet techniques.

Esther Traugot
Esther Traugot’s installations include crocheted wrappings in and around found natural objects with hand-dyed golden yarns, eliciting both a vibrant warmth and intimacy with her objects. As in gilding, the tiny golden stitches build up as form-fitting skins, blankets, or fill empty cracks, bringing attention to their fragility and implying an intrinsic value. Touching on narratives both personal and universal, she investigates a personal relationship with the natural world. Her experiences growing up very close to
nature influence her interest in the dichotomies in seeing oneself as an intrinsic part of nature and living in the modern world.
Since receiving her BFA from the University of California Berkeley in 2005, and her MFA from Mills College in 2009, she has shown extensively in solo and group exhibitions in the United States and abroad. She has been commissioned for the permanent collections of Neiman Marcus in Walnut Creek and Beverly Hills, and for private clients.
Esther Traugot is represented by Muriel Guepin Gallery in NY, and Chandra Cerrito Art Advisors in the Bay Area, CA, and currently lives and works in Northern California.

Class FAQ
We ask that you notify us at least 10 days in advance of a class if you need to cancel your registration. You may cancel by phone or email and we will gladly offer you a refund or credit toward a future class. If you cancel with less than 10 days’ notice, we will not be able to provide refunds, due to our contractual obligations and material purchases for each class.
Sometimes, the Sonoma Community Center has to cancel a class due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances, such as a natural disaster or health emergency. If this happens and we do not offer a reschedule date, you will be refunded 100% of your registration fee (minus the payment processing and services fee), or credit towards a future class. If we are able to offer a reschedule date but you are unable to make the new date, we will gladly offer credit towards a future class.

Late additions to any program, class, or workshop that has already begun will be allowed on a per-case basis depending upon the Program Director & instructors approval.
