Something Wicked Sonoma’s Way Comes
Sonoma Community Center to host a Haunted Market on Halloween
Sonoma, California. In honor of the 30th anniversary of Scream, Sonoma Community Center will host a “Haunted Market” on Saturday, October 31, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a special preview sale on Friday, October 30, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Held in Room 110, the market is a spooky shopping event for horror fans. There are no age restrictions, but some imagery may not be appropriate for minors. Admission to the Haunted Market is free.
Cat Smith, known around the Center as its official “Screambassador,” organized this event to coincide with a weekend of Scream anniversary film events at the Center, which will be announced separately. The Center sees several horror fans weekly who make the trek to see where one of their favorite movies was filmed. Around Halloween and whenever a new movie is released, the staff sees extra visitors.
“Halloween doesn’t often fall on a weekend,” said Smith. “We’re expecting plenty of Screamers to visit the Center that day, so a market felt like a fun way to add to the celebration and support local artists at the same time.”
Vendors will be selling original art, hand-printed cards, ceramics, leather goods, apparel, dolls, jewelry, fossils, crystals, and more. Local cross-country and track and field coach John Litzenberg III will be signing his first novel, “Dead at Home.” For those more into treats than tricks, Sinful Sweets by Stacie will sell delicious toffee, while Chewy Peps Candy will sample its newest flavor, Pumpkin Spice.
Visitors should plan to come to the Friday and Saturday events hungry. On Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., the Center’s Chef G will serve movie-theater-inspired food, including loaded hot dogs, homemade potato chips, and soft pretzels. Noble Folk Ice Cream will be bringing flavors created especially for the event, like Casey’s Toasted Butter Popcorn and Ghostface’s Red Velvet Cheesecake. On Saturday, the HopMonk food truck will be at the Center for the length of the Haunted Market, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Shoppers may also visit the 19 Crimes Wine Bar throughout all events, both Friday and Saturday (21+).
“All of the artists are so unique from each other while taking inspiration from a collective love of horror and Halloween,” Smith continued. “One artist describes her work as fantastical, spooky, and whimsical, while another says his work is ‘expressly trans and queer-centered, celebrating different devilish holy rebels.’”
Also available at the Haunted Market will be the remaining limited-edition tote bags from LA artist Sammy Ruiz and New Yorker cartoonist Hilary Campbell. When sold out, these designs will be retired from production. The new tote bag design by Hannah Day will be revealed at Friday night’s Haunted Market. All tote bags and prints were screenprinted at the Sonoma Community Center, in Room 208, the classroom used for the high school scenes in Scream.
Whether coming for the movie, the market, the food, or to reenact favorite moments from Scream, visitors will be welcomed with open arms. Costumes are encouraged, but please leave the Ghostface mask at home. Masks are not allowed.
The Haunted Market takes place Friday, October 30, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. (preview sale) and Saturday, October 31, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Sonoma Community Center, 276 East Napa Street. Admission is free. For more information, visit SonomaCommunityCenter.org or call 707-938-4626. The Center is open to the public daily from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to visit, but asked not to interrupt classes and events.
