Many have come to the Center to see our new tenants, Moringa and Marigold. These two life-size elephant sculptures are from the international Great Elephant Migration Project, which promotes human-wildlife coexistence, frees forests from invasive species, and supports Indigenous communities through sustainable businesses.
The Center’s elephant sculptures are based on a living matriarch and adolescent from the densely populated Nilgiri Hills region of Southern India. The sculptures are funded through a generous gift from the KHR McNeely Family Foundation, who, after seeing the exhibition, were deeply moved by the mission of the organization and the artistry of the indigenous communities who bring these elephants to life. They knew immediately they wanted to bring part of this story home to Sonoma. The elephants will be a permanent part of the Sonoma Community Center’s gardens and inspire programming and community gathering for years to come.
Sonoma Valley Museum of Art is the host venue for tomorrow night’s Sonoma Art Walk. They will kick off the walk beginning at 5 PM. See their current exhibit, grab your map, and then come to the Center and celebrate our elephants. Mayor Patricia Farrar-Rivas and the Sonoma Chamber of Commerce will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 6:30 PM. Light refreshments will be served.
