About the class

Join Amanda Bury as she shares how she creates her dynamic surface compositions. We start with a morning walk and time in playful observation at the Sonoma Garden Park where we will collect inspiration and images from the burgeoning plant life using our phone camera. These will become the source material for us to create newsprint image transfers. Back in the studio after a picnic lunch in the garden, Amanda will demonstrate how she uses a lightboard to translate photos into transferable drawings for the clay surface.

Using colored slip, transfers and sgraffito a unique and engaging surface comes to life. Students will then create their own surface masterpiece and leave with either a set of 4 coasters or one larger trivet/hotplate piece of their creation.

Student Prep:

  • The group will be walking to and eating lunch in Sonoma Garden Park; please bring along a lunch for yourself or something to share with the group – Sonoma Ceramics will provide a variety of beverages, please bring along your reusable water bottle!
  • (Cars will be available to support accessibility needs of those who prefer not to or cannot walk to the park)

Please share any special considerations (medical, physical, learning) that will help your instructor make your class accessible and accommodating for you. You can share these considerations when register or by emailing Sean at sean@sonomacommunitycenter.org.

About the instructor

Amanda Bury

Instructor / Artist

Amanda grew up in Washington state. She has always found comfort in the natural world around her. Amanda’s functional ware pays homage to our food origins and the marvelously complex and deeply flawed systems that move food from the ground to our tables every day. She remains influenced by memories of her grandmother’s garden and her time working on farms during college. Her practice is nourished by time spent tending her own food gardens, and by supporting her local farmers’ market.

Amanda received a Bachelor of Art in Studio Art and a Bachelor of Art in Anthropology from Central Washington University. She then went on to pursue Post-Baccalaureate study in Ceramics at the University of Montana. Amanda has spent time as an artist in residence at well-known arts organizations across the country including The Morean Center for Clay in Saint Petersburg, Florida, and Belger Crane Yard Studios in Kansas City, Missouri. Amanda recently relocated to the Northern California Region and served as Administrative Coordinator at Cobb Mountain Arts and Ecology Project for a year. Amanda regularly shows in invitational and national juried exhibitions and her work is held in both public and private collections worldwide.
