About the class

Join expert quilter Laura Lee Fritz at Quilt Block of the Month workshops to explore a variety of quilt blocks and design variations. Expand your machine quilting library and enhance your skills. It’s the perfect opportunity for both new and experienced quilting enthusiasts who are eager to learn new techniques. The 2024 series of Quilt Block of the Month will focus on mastering straight line geometric patterns. Learn precision techniques and how to sew multiple blocks at once. During each three-hour workshop you’ll complete at least one block or block-set of the current pattern. Sign up for a single workshop or several! Future quilt blocks will include: Goose in the Pond (October) and Snowball (November).

Each block or, depending on design, block-set, will be 20”. If you make two of each block we can assemble Sampler Quilts later on. If you also make a bunch of blocks, you can end up with a lap quilt of each different block repeated to create its own visual surface.

Basic machine sewing experience is required. No quilting experience is necessary.

September 2024 Quilt Block: Log Cabin

With samples of different layouts to open our imaginations, this block is exciting to learn. It is deliciously simple to make, but the assembly is so essential that this lesson is related to numerous other blocks, and to border construction as well.

What to bring:

  • You can choose to simply show up and use the sewing machines, fabric and thread in the Fiber Arts Studio!
  • Or choose to bring your own sewing machine (in good working order), fabric and thread. For this workshop you will need: One half-yard of an all-cotton light color for the background fabric and a fat quarter each of five other fabrics to contrast with the background. Bring thread that will be discreet in the seams or “coordinates with or neutralizes its visibility on your fabric choices.”

Please share any special considerations (medical, physical, learning) that will help your instructor make your class accessible and accommodating for you. You can share these considerations when register or by emailing Sean at sean@sonomacommunitycenter.org.
