About the class

This presentation followed by a demonstration is designed for anyone who is curious about painting with watercolor and/or gouache – the terms, materials, and techniques. What is transparent wash versus opaque gouache? You’ll learn the differences between these two mediums then watch the instructor create a watercolor landscape painting. The session will conclude with a question and answer period.

Presentation about Luminosity vs. Opacity

  • Layers of transparent washes that are built up gradually create a translucent glow. This is in comparison to a quick build up of opaque paint applied with gouache.
  • The white of the paper gets to come through in transparent watercolor. With opaque the white of the paper is covered and highlights can be painted using white paint at the end.
  • Learn about the differences in the two kinds of materials: paint pigments, papers, etc.
  • See the difference in finished paintings brought by the instructor.

Demonstration of Landscape Painting in Transparent Watercolor

  • Brief discussion about the paper, paints and brushes that will be used for the demonstration.
  • Working from the furthest point in the background to the foreground in planned out steps.
  • Working from thin light washes built up from lightest values to darkest shadows.
  • Establishing some of the deepest shadows early in the painting process, and why.
  • Color theory as it applies to this demonstration piece: warm vs. cool, primary, secondary and tertiary color use.
  • Protecting your finished painting, framing, using archival methods and materials discussion.
  • Question and answer period.

About the instructor

Robert Benson

Instructor / Artist

As a lifelong artist, I worked 25 years as a commercial artist and art director in advertising prior to moving to Sonoma County in 2001. For the past 20 years I have dedicated my painting to exploring exquisite Northern California landscapes, still life, people, and pet portrait work. My aim is to produce paintings of familiar subjects with universal appeal and a fresh perspective.  I create appealing, accessible paintings to enhance your home or business space. My goal as a painter is to stay loose and let your eye fill in where there is little detail and to evoke an emotional response as you interact with the spirit of my work.
