Plein Air Watercolor Landscapes with Built Structures: A Day at Jack London Park
Paint Jack London Park’s historic buildings in watercolor. One-day plein air workshop covering composition, perspective & color. All levels.
program overview
Jack London State Park is an incredible setting for plein air painting, not only because of the beautiful views of rolling hills and distant wooded ridges, but also the many historical structures on the grounds. In this one-day workshop, participants will create a composition centered on one of the elegant old buildings in the park and explore the ways that architectural forms can add to a plein air painting. This class will cover the fundamentals of landscape painting including composition, and atmospheric perspective, as well as the basics of rendering constructed subjects, namely linear perspective.
We’ll start the class with quick thumbnail sketches, then select one composition to focus on throughout the day. Through demonstration and individual instruction, you’ll learn color mixing and watercolor technique while building your painting step by step.
Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy while taking a break, and a lightweight folding chair if you have one. Otherwise seating is at picnic tables and park benches or on the ground. All other materials are provided.
All levels of experience are welcome!
After the workshop you may choose to go hiking, tour the museum, or walk to the ruins of the Wolf House.
Important note: There is a Vehicle Entry Fee of $15. After the kiosk, veer to the right and proceed to the parking lot. All students will meet the instructor in the parking lot and walk together to the cottage garden. Dress for the weather.
