Tricks for Treats: Homemade Candy Demo

Halloween candy-making demo: learn to make butterscotch caramels, homemade Cracker Jack, and honeycomb candy on your home stove.

There’s something magical about turning simple, everyday sugar into molten golden candy. Just in time for Halloween, step into the kitchen for an evening of sweet science as we explore the foundational art of caramelized sugar! In this 1.5-hour demonstration, I’ll demystify sugar cookery and show you how to transform caramelized sugar into three distinct treats right on your home stove.

Chewy Butterscotch Caramels: Master the precise temperatures and timing needed to make soft, buttery caramels with a deep, rich caramelized sugar base.

Homemade Cracker Jack: Learn how to coat freshly popped corn and roasted nuts in a light, crunchy caramel shell that bakes to crisp perfection.

Golden Honeycomb Candy & “Cheater’s” Tempered Chocolate: Watch airy, bubbly honeycomb expand before your eyes! We’ll top it off with a quick, fail-safe “cheater’s” method for tempering chocolate. No tricky thermometer steps required.

Throughout the demonstration, I’ll share key candy-making safety tips, temperature benchmarks, and common troubleshooting tricks so you can work with hot sugar confidently at home. We’ll cover how flavor profiles shift as sugar darkens and how to adapt these classic recipes for your own seasonal gatherings.

Snacks and beverages will be available while you watch, ask questions, and take notes. At the end of class, we’ll fill your goody bags with the treats made in class… after ample samples, of course. You’ll leave with the confidence to bring a little extra trick-or-treat magic into your home kitchen this spooky season and beyond!

Leila Clement

I am a professional pastry cook and baker who believes the best way to connect is through something made by hand. My own culinary journey began as a self-taught learner, which gives me a unique perspective on how to break down complex skills effectively. Having worked in fine-dining pastry departments and award-winning bakeries, I now focus on bridging the gap between professional technique and the home kitchen.

Because I started exactly where you are, I find so much joy in helping students break through technical barriers and grow their confidence. I am a firm believer in staying in a ‘student mindset’. I view class as a collaborative space where we can all learn from one another. I can’t wait to see what we create together!

Through teaching, I now focus on bridging the gap between professional technique and the home kitchen.
